This was our first stay at this hotel, and our initial impression was very positive. The lady at the front desk was professional, friendly, and welcoming. The two valet parking attendants were also incredibly helpful and courteous, making us feel well taken care of from the moment we arrived. Unfortunately, our experience took a disappointing turn that evening. The bathtub drain was clearly clogged—the water drained extremely slowly, and dirty debris came back up through the drain, making it impossible for us to shower. We immediately contacted the front desk. The gentleman who answered informed us that nothing could be done that night and that maintenance would only be available the following morning. We were also told that no alternative room was available. What was even more disappointing was the complete lack of apology or empathy, and no effort was made to offer any other solution. As a result, our family of three was unable to shower that night. This is not the level of service or accommodation we would expect from a four-star hotel. It was extremely frustrating and had a significant negative impact on our stay. I hope the hotel will pay more attention to the maintenance of its guest rooms and improve how staff handle situations like this, with more empathy and a stronger commitment to resolving guests' concerns promptly.
Great bang for your buck. The front desk people are the best. Shoutout Austin, Dustin, and Fred. They’ve got a good hearty breakfast bar, super nice. The servers are too nice for how much they put up with😂. I think the rooms are pretty good bang for your buck.

As a hotel general manager, I choose not to stay in hotels when I travel often as I need the break. But I was so happy I chose to stay at the Royal Sonesta while seeing a concert in town. My King suite was so beautiful and the views were perfect. The bed was very comfortable and the black out curtains were true to their name. The staff was accommodating and friendly. I would stay here again in a second and recommend it to others.
A group of is stayed for two nights for a graduation celebration. I come to Portland every few months and like to try different hotels downtown. The Royal Sonesta seemed like a great choice for room size and location. The good: friendly, helpful staff. Location is good. Rooms are large and well appointed. The bad: our one person who required ADA accommodation had to wait 2.5 hours past 4:00PM check in before her room was ready. By then we had activities to attend so this person was not able to check in and get ready prior. Hotel staff were helpful but did not offer compensation equal to the delay. During our stay we encountered several people who were having drug or mental health issues, including 12:30 in the morning when we were woken to screams of someone not doing well. It took some time to get back to sleep because we were shaken by the experience. Given all the options for hotels in downtown Portland, The Royal Sonesta will not be one I choose to stay at in the future.
Pros - centrally located only a few minutes walk to Powell’s book store - cute decor - security feels safe - water and $15 credit that can go towards candies or beverages etc… - large rooms Cons - parking is $55 lots of parking garages nearby for cheaper - musty smelling in the whole hotel - breakfast was terrible for the price. I’m easy to please with food and I’m still annoyed thinking my husband and I paid $30 for the most basic breakfast that was super plain
