We visited Elephant & Castle during our trip to Chicago and tried a few different dishes. Overall, it’s a lively pub-style restaurant with a casual, high-energy atmosphere. We started with the hummus, which had a balsamic drizzle that added a subtle sweetness. It was served with naan, celery, carrots, and cucumbers. Everything was fresh and a nice way to start the meal. For mains, we had the fish and chips and the Wee Pie Flight. The fish and chips were crispy and fresh, paired well with tartar sauce and lemon for extra flavor. The Wee Pie Flight included shepherd’s pie, chicken pot pie, steak and mushroom, and cheesy leek and potato. My ranking from favorite to least favorite was shepherd’s pie, chicken pot pie, steak and mushroom, and cheesy leek and potato. All were enjoyable, with the cheesy leek and potato being the mildest in flavor. Service was good. Staff checked in often and were attentive throughout the meal. One thing to note is that the restaurant is very loud, so it may not be ideal for those sensitive to noise or sensory overload. Overall, the food was good and the experience was enjoyable, but not particularly standout. Would I go back? Maybe… but only if I’m mentally prepared for the volume. Decent spot for World Cup game. Some tables didn’t have the best view. Get there early for the big ones. They also don’t honor happy hour on game day for World Cup. Sound could have been higher during game Other than that the chicken fingers and bread pudding were great. Service was good Fish N chips $17 Bread pudding $10

Simply a superb experience with a wide variety of dishes, all of which felt fresh and well balanced. It’s peak American and British comfort food done right, with something for everyone on the menu. Elephant & Castle Pub is conveniently located at the Wabash and Lake Street intersection, making it an easy stop in the city. The place has a charming, nostalgic feel paired with great food and drinks. The indoor space is spacious and comfortable, ideal for relaxing and actually enjoying your meal. While outdoor seating is available, it’s right next to the train tracks, so it can get quite loud and make conversation difficult. Overall, a great spot for hearty food, good drinks, and a classic pub atmosphere.
I have gotten takeout of their bread pudding multiple times you absolutely must try it. It is the best traditional dessert I’ve ever had in Chicago. Today was my first time dining in, and I ordered the shepherd's pie and fries. The fries were excellent, but I was a bit disappointed with the shepherd's pie. It was under seasoned yet overly greasy. The dish was made of mashed potatoes, frozen vegetables, and ground meat, but the mashed potatoes on top didn't seem baked enough. The flavors of the potatoes, meat, and frozen veggies didn't blend together, and the texture was hard to describe. There was too much oil at the bottom, and it just didn't taste great, though it was barely acceptable. Since it was my first time trying it, maybe I just don't like shepherd's pie in general. That said, everything else was great, and I also ordered a bread pudding to go when I leave. The service here is excellent. The staff checked on me regularly and were incredibly friendly and polite. The atmosphere is also amazing everyone was cheering for the World Cup together, which made for a fun and relaxing vibe. Even though I don't really follow sports, I loved the overall decor and energy. I will definitely come back to try other dishes
Having lived abroad, shepherd's pie is one dish I really wish we had more of in America, so I'm always excited to find a restaurant that serves it. It was pretty decent but not quite top-tier. The salad that comes with it is good. I was more impressed with the pretzel bites, which were amazingly fresh and delicious with a generous portion of cheese dip. I would come back again to try some of the other pies.
