This was such a neat place! It has many interactive exhibits that my teens enjoyed and I would think younger kids would as well. The gift shop has a good assortment of items. It was memorable to be able to stand in the Wright brothers print shop and feel a part of history. The displays are wonderful. And it was free! Perfect place to spend a few hours and learn about history in a very interesting and hands on way!
Dayton Aviation Heritage NHS is actually several sites around the city, but if you have time to only stop at one, the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center gives you your best "bang for your buck". The visitor center is very informative, free, with a small gift shop, Junior Ranger program, and passport stamps. Ranger led tours of the Wright Brothers bicycle start at the top of every hour, so if that's interesting, make sure you plan around that.

Amazing piece of history preserved here. Much of the building was kept as is so you can see how it looked originally. You can see Ink stains on the floor from the Wright Brothers printing press! What I took away from visiting and seeing all of the process the brothers used to learn how to fly was they were true mechanical geniuses. I learned that as part of their learning process they built a wind tunnel as well.
We visited the Kill Devil/Kitty Hawk site a few days ago and decided to stop in Dayton en route. It's a lovely museum with a balanced approach to local history, developed the Brothers' family and community relationships more than the other museums, contains a replica glider, and has video on modern attempts at flying replica glider (only that pilot wisely has a helmet on in lieu of the necktie!) We greatly enjoyed the exhibits that demonstrate the printing and bicycle businesses, the Dayton cash register business, and most importantly, learning about their literature colleague, Mr Laurence Dunbar. We never heard of Mr Dunbar until we discovered his connection to the Brothers at Kill Devil. His poetry is delightful, his family history and perseverance was just as ambitious as the Brothers, and we will be learning more about his writing as a result of our trip here. Was able to purchase an introductory book to his poetry in the gift shop.
Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park was such an inspiring experience! It’s a beautiful place to explore the history of aviation and learn more about the incredible innovation that started in Dayton. The exhibits were educational, well-organized, and made the visit both fun and meaningful. Perfect for history lovers, families, and anyone curious about flight.
