This gem of Ohio is a wonderful historic building. Very well cared for. Beautiful furnishings, art, and decorating. Wayfinding g definitely needs improvement throughout. Depending on a paper map (if you know where to obtain one) should be a backup plan, not primary. Having historically correct signage for North & South Galleries, Atrium, which upper area is for Senate or House, marking garage exit etc should be done immediately. Complete campus maps should be on each floor in a prominent place. More electronics displays for committee meetings and sessions should be made available.
The Ohio Statehouse marks the fifteenth state capitol tour we have completed. Each statehouse we’ve visited has its own unique charm, yet aesthetically, this one ranked among our lesser favorites. That said, the grand staircase evoked memories of the Arkansas Statehouse (our pick for the most classically beautiful) and the museum entrance recalled the visitor entrance at our Kansas State Capitol, which remains our top favorite. We enjoyed the well-maintained grounds and the impressive collection of historical statues surrounding the building. A particularly delightful detail was discovering fossils embedded in the stonework, visible both inside and out. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, though overall left only a modest impression. I really enjoyed my visit to the Ohio Statehouse. The architecture is beautiful, and the museum exhibits give a great overview of the building’s design and history. There’s so much to learn about both the construction and the role the Statehouse has played over time. If you want to go through all the exhibits thoroughly, it can easily take a full day. A great place to explore if you enjoy history, architecture, or just want to experience an important landmark in Ohio.
Outstanding guided tour of the Ohio Statehouse on Sunday 10/12/25. This tour is a must see if you are looking for a good activity when in Columbus, Ohio! You will not be disappointed. Our guide was former military and had an expert knowledge of Ohio history. Can’t think of a better way to spend taxpayer money.
Another in our series of State houses as our grandchildren try to make it to all 50. The lack of a dome (there’s a conical roof instead) really didn’t appeal to me architecturally but the rest of the building is really fun and interesting.
