ImaginOn is a hidden gem for kids and families in Charlotte. Be sure to check the story time schedule on the ImaginOn website before you go. There are so many activities for children, including LEGO, letter transformers, crayon coloring, video games, touch-screen games, board games, puppet theater, toy car models, and of course a wonderful book selection. It is very easy to spend an entire afternoon here. Whether you have a newborn, a young child, or even a teenager, you can usually find something engaging for them. A lot of people mention parking, so here are a few tips: 1. The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar has a stop about a 6-minute walk away, and the streetcar is currently free as of 05/2026. 2. The LYNX Blue Line has a stop right in front of the building. 3. If you park in the garage, set a timer for around 80 minutes so you can leave before the 90-minute free validation period ends. 4. If you stay longer, the parking fee after 90 minutes can also be seen as a way to support this wonderful library and children's space. If you are on a budget, consider using tips 1–3. Overall, this is a fantastic place for families and one of the best free indoor activities for kids in Charlotte.
It was nice to spend time in Charlotte. We wanted to find something for the kids to do while on a business trip. They had so much FUN it was hard to get them to leave after hours and they wanted to stay to look for some books. There were so many hands on activities. Unfortunately, we missed the sold out children's theater. However, the tons of smiling children dressed up in FROZEN costumes told me right away that it was a great show. My only concern was there was a parking garage, but no discount or free parking nearby. Otherwise, we had a great time. Plus it was just steps from the Market on 7th where we had a fantastic Italian Pizza.

We had the best experience at the Charlotte children’s public library during a long layover in Charlotte! My teens (14 &15) and I decided to take the bus downtown from the airport to grab a bite and explore a little. I offered them several options for our layover adventure: a little walking/sightseeing downtown, a park, a science museum, or the children’s library... and of course, they chose the library, hoping there might be a used book sale where they could find something to read (my kids are readers, and bc we had very limited space in our bags, they had each only brought one book for a long international flight). Oh! I had already vetoed buying airport books because this teacher cannot pay airport book prices! The library itself is amazing, but the teen section was especially impressive. We ended up chatting with the incredibly friendly librarians in the Teen Loft, and when they heard about my kids’ “predicament,” they generously gifted them several really cool books. Needless to say, my kids were over the moon. What started as a practical layover stop turned into one of the highlights of our trip. The space is beautiful, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed for teen readers, but what made it truly special was the kindness and customer care of the staff. The $2.50 bus fare and the short walk downtown (even with luggage) were absolutely worth it. This library is a gem, and we are so grateful for the experience!
We came to explore ImaginON library, with my family and we had a very nice time! The story time was very entertaining and Miss Jenna did a great job reading all the stories! The library is very nice, there are some designated play areas for kids to play and also tablets to play on. They have a very nice book selection and my oldest enjoyed reading. Overall, the library offers many story time and programs for families.
Don't be fooled! This is not a real public library. It's public funded childcare center. Even if you are a tax paying member of the public you will be kicked out of you don't have a child to escort you through the facility. On top of everything else I see there are people with pictures to show the facilities off. How fortunate that they didn't get harassed by staff and security as to why they were doing that because they asked me to remove the ones I took to which I hoped to use to show off a place that is nice looking. It was a very unpleasant experience to be accosted in a public facility for doing what is normal to do in a public space. Public funding should not be spent on a place that isn't welcoming to the public.
