This is unlike many museum I’ve visited. In ways it’s rendered like a typical German village, that is compact, yet highly functional and practical. It feels squeezed together without uncomfort, not claustrophobic, but certainly less spacious than modern museums. It’s interesting how one exhibit opens to another, in ways it feels like being in a maze. In some ways it could be designed better, so that you can focus on certain areas more. Despite its’ footprint this museum packs a punch. There’s so much to see. It falls a little short in interactive exhibits, yet it’s still great. Herein you’ll learn about hockey, the underground railroad, Detroit’s founding and more. I feel you could spend several hours just reading. While it’s not the most modern museum it has wall to wall exhibits organized quite logically. I’ve been here a few times and have had a great time. And lastly, it’s walking distance to several other key Detroit museums including the DIA, Science, African American, etc.
This place is a hidden jem. The museum is located across the DIA museum, and I'm surprised by how I've seem to have missed this place. The DHM teaches you about the history of Detroit, and how we came about to be. This museum is HUGE, so go with a clear mind, a well fed belly and your walking shoes lol. There's many interactive stations for kids and parents and the museum did NOT forget a single point of Detroit's history. I 10/10 recommend going here when you're in the area alone or with your family!

Love this place. Been there multiple times. Been lucky enough to get in for free each time. They do have parking. Always very friendly at the reception desk before you enter. Also have a gift shop with unique Sports merchandise would definitely recommend
The place is very informative and a great place to spend a few hours. The staff are very helpful and kind. Ample street parking nearby as well.
Wow, I had no idea this was such a great museum for kids! Parking was easy. I used a MAP ticket from the library for free and the kids were free admission. We stayed approx 2hours and had rich conversations about many topics. My 5, 4, and baby all had something to hold their attention. The museum was extremely clean and the staff was friendly. We will definitely be back.
