I had an amazing experience visiting Belle Isle Aquarium. It’s a beautiful, historic aquarium with a calm and relaxing atmosphere that makes it perfect for families, couples, or even a solo visit. The variety of fish and aquatic life is impressive, especially considering its rich history as one of the oldest aquariums in the country. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions and share interesting facts about the exhibits. Everything was well-maintained and clean, and the layout makes it easy to explore without feeling rushed. What I really loved is how peaceful it feels compared to bigger, crowded attractions. It’s not overly commercial, which makes the experience more authentic and enjoyable. A hidden gem in Detroit that’s definitely worth visiting again.
What an incredibly grand architecture for an aquarium! It's bigger than it looks at first and has plenty of exhibits. It's a bit tight so definitely want to go during down hours.

Belle Isle Aquarium is a must-visit and a hidden gem in Detroit. As the oldest operating aquarium in North America, it combines beautiful historic architecture with an amazing variety of aquatic life. The sea-green tiled ceilings and classic design make it feel like you’re walking through an underwater tunnel. There are over 50 tanks featuring everything from Great Lakes fish to coral reef species, axolotls, and even octopus displays. Best of all, admission is free, making it a perfect budget-friendly stop while exploring Belle Isle State Park. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in the area.
America's oldest aquarium is free with a stunning green tiled ceiling. Very roaring 20s in design. Features the aquatic creatures of the Great Lakes from several species of Gar to odd looking frogs, stingrays, etc. A must visit while on Belle Isle.
My husband and I had never been here before, so decided to take a road trip to check it out. I'm so glad we did. The building is BEAUTIFUL, the volunteers were very friendly, and the exibits were clean and well thought out. Although the aquarium isn't as big as some you pay to see, they have a really nice assortment of things to look at and we spent a couple hours there. For being something run via donations, it's an amazing place and it's nice to see that they are currently working on adding more improvements to it
