The museum was pretty underwhelming for me. They have a large building, but large areas of the building are not used for exhibit space - they are left open. Of the exhibits they do have, one of the largest is a generic America 250 exhibit that discusses the American Revolution generally, but not Charlotte's role specifically. The America 250 exhibit is a limited experience unless you pay to rent an iPad for additional content. There are a limited number of exhibits with a limited number of objects on display, and very little (if at all) discussion of the history of Charlotte - what pre-European settlement was like, what drew European settlement to the place, why a city developed here and what drive that growth. My timing did not line up to be able to tour the rock house nearby. The highlight of my visit was the Rosenwald School on the site.
A great tour of the home with a very informative discussion and imaginative guide who described the construction of the home with real passion for history. And proceeded to speculate with a real zest for the possible untold stories in the intervening years between the home being a private residence and a museum.

What a hidden gem in Charlotte! We’ve lived here for 15 years and have just made our way there. We especially loved the outdoor tour with a wonderful tour guide dressed in period garb.
Well worth a couple of hours! Get the histopad to immerse yourself in Revolutionary War history. Then walk the beautiful grounds to see historic buildings.
We were absolutely delighted by our visit here! The lady was sooo helpful when we arrived. She explained every indoor area of the museum as well as outdoors. We took our time and enjoyed every written, material, informative video presentations, and outdoor exploration of the museum! Everything is expertly arranged. A history buff's dream.
