A friend recommended this place and it certainly is as advertised. There is literally a litany of gum, all up and down the length of the walls and window frames here. Thousands of people have contributed to this quirky, dynamic public "artwork". The cobblestone roadway here contributes to the ambiance and makes this place seem otherworldly. There is a sign here that explains a little bit of the history of this wall that apparently started in the early 90s. The one thing that is missing though is either a gumball machine or a place that sells gum 🤔 I would almost think that is an obvious must have here to give more ammo to the myriad of future contributors to this art piece.
One of those quirky attractions that perfectly captures the city’s personality is the Gum Wall. Tucked into Post Alley beneath Pike Place Market, this colorful wall is covered in layers upon layers of chewed gum that visitors have been adding to since the early 1990s. The tradition started when theatergoers waiting for shows at the nearby Market Theater began sticking gum to the wall. Several cleaning attempts failed, and eventually the city accepted defeat and embraced it as an attraction. Voilà.

Gum Wall is one of those places that’s interesting to see once, but I found it a bit overrated. Seeing thousands of pieces of gum covering the walls was more disgusting than impressive. It happened to be on our way, and the kids insisted on stopping by, so we checked it out. Overall, it’s a fun and quirky attraction for a quick visit, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just to see it.
Visited the famous Gum Wall down in Post Alley under Pike Place Market. Unbelievably colorful, highly unusual, and surprisingly expansive brick alleyway completely covered in decades of chewed gum. Definitely smells strongly of sweet, artificial fruit, so be prepared for a bit of a sensory overload. Very crowded on summer afternoons, but a quick, free, and iconic photo-op that you have to see at least once while exploring the market.
My son came to Seattle to see The Gum wall! Because of that, we did not have a choice not to go and see it. Interesting of course, may be people are thinking that it is an art, I still see only gums that someone is chew before putting on a wall. But needs to be seen as a one very famous attraction for younger tourists.:) Conveniently located at Pike Place Market! Just need to find a sign and buy a gum!
