The Grand Resort

I want to give this place more stars but I'm struggling. While the grounds, location, and building are beautiful, it leaves much to be desired. They let us do early check in when we arrived which was great because we had a tee time. The room is truly no different than a Hampton or Marriot. I would think for the price point there would be something to make it stand out. My biggest issue was service. The people at security, concierge, and reception were very kind and hospitable. But when it came to service in the atrium and outside bars, I found the attitude and service very much lacking. Between unreasonably long wait times for food and drinks and the unfriendliness of the servers, it was enough to make me not want to come back. I understand wait times for busy times but when Im at breakfast for over and hour waiting for 2 pancakes, and 20 minutes for coffee, maybe something needs to change. Then, at the pool, we asked the server for 2 beers and she never came back. We watched her serve everyone else around us though. I just think once again for the price point, there should be higher scale service. Overall it was just okay. We may be back but I definitely won't go anywhere near the Atrium for meals.

Underwhelmed. Primarily with service. Most of staff seems less than happy to be there, having been to other resorts (Gervasi, Nemacolin, Pinehurst, Walden) we expected lots of smiles and greetings from staff, not the case here. While breakfast was delicious, lunch was mediocre at best. And both meals took at least 40 minutes to get to our table. The dining areas we were sitting in were not crowded. However, pool area was and It appears that all food to every aspect of the pool and the restaurants near come from one kitchen. Additionally, the dining areas are need of a deep clean, crumbs all over the floor, sticky surfaces. Our room is a nice size appreciate the multitude of pillows to select from, Bathroom seems like an oversight, however very tiny for a resort style hotel. Massage is booked for later in the day, Hopeful that that is more of the resort level service we are used to. Regrettably, at this point, I would not recommend Avalon friends or wish to return here.
