Really enjoyed this garden - went durring the cold season and it did not take away from the overall atmosphere of the park. I enjoyed having less folks around and was able to just find a spot to sit quietly for a little while, which I think is something everyone should try to do here. If you are on a shorter timeline this is a place that you can go and see without a huge time commitment and won't be disappointed with the view.
I was in Portland for a week attending a work conference. I had heard of the garden from a family member and recommended it to my colleagues. This Portland gem made me the superstar of the group. Make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes because the trails up and down or off beaten paths will challenge your stamina. You pay for your pass at the bottom before you begin your journey. If you're a college student, like myself, take advantage of the discount. The zen and mountainous scenery is enchanting and charming all through out. You immediately run into a gift shop. They offer scheduled tour guides but any inquisitive soul can manage the easy to guide directions. It wasn't shoulder to shoulder busy but it was pretty busy for a Wednesday night. My favorite were the big coy fish and the bonzai trees. Make sure you catch the rose garden when you come back down, right across the street.

Pretty average garden I’d say. Not worth $22 admission that’s for sure. Gift shop was the nicest thing about the place, there was some cool Japanese stuff I bought, spent about $150, employees were all super nice. But as a garden? Pretty basic, you can walk through it pretty quick, a lot smaller than I thought, and you gotta pay for parking. They had some koi fish which were cool. And you got to learn a little about Japanese culture which was cool but again for the price meh 😑 pretty basic garden if you are looking for exotic and a botanical feel this isn’t really it in my opinion. I mean maybe it’s because I went in December, at least have winter and summer rates. There is a good view of the city at one point so catch that.
The gardens are absolutely beautiful. Very well maintained and clean, including the restrooms. There are many photo ops all around the grounds with a fantastic view of Portland with Mt. Hood in the background. There are memberships available for single and multiple on line and at the window and gift shop. If you purchase from the gift shop your entry fee is refunded and it affords you entry for a year and a 20% discount in the gift shop. It's definitely worth the trip. My only issue was with the parking. Not great but there is a free shuttle that goes around.
Fantastic visit to this Japanese garden. Our first time visiting Oregon from the UK and thiz was high one our list of things to see - and it didnt disappoint. The planting, pathways and structures looked fantastic. It was busy but not overly so and everything was well maintained. Food in the cafe was great as well. Plenty of nearby car parking and short queues to enter.
