If you like infrastructure, you need to visit this place - it's easy to miss but is well worth your time. The guided tour is excellent, the views from the top are incredible, and if you go at the right time during bridge lifting season, you can see the bridge go up from the inside! I went on a Saturday during the spring 2026 lifting season and got to see the bridge go up at 11:57 AM. However, times vary based on how quickly the boats are moving and the order they are raised in, so during the fall lifting season it would likely be much earlier. The first floor (including the mechanical room and restroom) is accessible, but the rest of the floors are not. The restroom is well-maintained.
An awesome somewhat hidden free museum that allows you to see the workings of the Michigan Street lift bridge and climb the tower, reading about the history of the river on horn way up. And on the top floor you are greeted with great views of the river, Wrigley building, and Michigan avenue. Great way to learn some history

I stopped in while walking along the Riverwalk because I was curious what was inside one of the bridge houses. It was free to enter, with a donation option, and the people at the front made the visit simple and easy to follow. The museum is compact and spread over several stair levels, with displays about the river, the bridges, and the lift machinery. The views through the small openings and from the top were a nice bonus, especially toward Michigan Avenue and the river. It is a quick stop, but worth doing if it is open, just know there is no elevator past the first floor.
Visited May 2025. Entrance is free of charge but you can (as I did) give a donasjon. Was greeted by three very friendly people, had a nice little chat with them, they showed me some cool old pictures of the bridge/river on the PC and i also got recommendation about another attraction outside of Chicago. It’s a self-guided tour spread across four levels (if I remember correctly). Access is only by stairs, which might be challenging for some visitors. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of interesting information displayed on boards throughout the site. Very nice with all the openings at each level where you have view towards the river, bridge etc. Entrance and exit is the same, so you will have to walk back down again to exit.
This is a free museum ran by the friends of the Chicago River and you can see it's definitely a labor of love. Highly recommend visiting to get a little more familiar with the Chicago river history and to look at the river bridge mechanisms. Please consider leaving them a donation on your way out as well!
