My wife and I had our wedding and reception at the Frederick Stearns House in Detroit. We both wanted the day to be a special celebration of not only our marriage, but also two families coming together. We initially met with Rachel and Eric Mitchell, the owners of this beautiful, historic landmark on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, in the Spring of ’25 to discuss plans for an October wedding. We expressed our desire to have our wedding day be memorable, intimate and fun. Eric and Rachel listened carefully to our vision for the day and took care of all the details. From the flower arrangements throughout the beautiful house to the delicious hors d’oeuvres served at the reception and fun, nostalgic atmosphere of the prohibition era speakeasy, everything was perfect. The Frederick Stearns House truly is one of Detroit’s hidden gems. Located north of Detroit, near the Indian Village area and close to Belle Isle, this lovingly restored bed-and-breakfast is the perfect “home-base” for any out-of-town guests who want to explore Detroit attractions. The owners, Rachel and Eric, went above and beyond to make our wedding day extra special. We highly recommend the Frederick Stearns house as a unique venue to any couple looking for a beautiful, memorable wedding and reception!
Our stay at the Frederic Stearns House was fantastic. The rooms are well appointed and true to the photos on the website. The house was decorated beautifully for the holidays. We rented all but one room for the weekend of my daughter's wedding. It was the perfect place for our extended family to gather together. There was plenty of room for 14 of us to eat breakfast together as well as to socialize in the pub or the living/parlour room. The Frederick Stearns House is a real gem that has been beautifully renovated and will provide a fantastic setting for a family get together or a special night away. There's plenty of space and good wifi to work if needed. The Frederick Stearns House is an easy and quick drive into the City and is the perfect place to stay while exploring the many area museums, athletic events, college visits, or just a relaxing vacation. The Frederick Stearns House is even better in person than in the photos---certainly a 5 star experience!!

To stay at Frederick Stearns House is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Rachel and her husband have totally renovated this grand dame of mansions, providing beautiful rooms with large new bathrooms, and mattresses that are so comfortable, all are guaranteed a great night sleep! There are so many beautifully restored rooms throughout, thoughtfully done in the tradition of the house, that dates back to very early 1900's, that one can imagine the lifestyle just by sitting in the reading room, or sneaking down to the speak-easy! There are two wood floor rooms with stunning chandeliers that can easily accommodate 50! Great place for Tango and Ballroom dancers! Two of the public fireplaces are adorned with Pewabic tiles - The art on the walls, the colors chosen, the extra special amenities are just stunning. Rachel, a professional and friendly host, puts on a great breakfast with delicious treats in addition to the eggs any-style and handmade pastries. Plenty of parking and a ten minute drive to downtown, fifteen to Grosse Pointe, making this a great location. For architects, historians and ArtDeco fans, and others, this is the place to be. Thanks for such a great time!
The Stearns House is the only place we stay in Detroit. Awesome rooms, close to many places we enjoy going to! But the best part is the warm welcome and great conversations with Rachel and Eric and the other guests! Oops forgot the awesome breakfast prepared by Rachel. Highly recommended by our family! Eric and Elaine
Rachel & Eric were incredible hosts the weekend we came to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary back in July! What an absolute GEM they have restored back to its original, timeless, historic charm it was meant for. Eric gave us a tour of the house, after he poured us drinks in the festive atmosphere of the billiards and bar area of the basement. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Eric & Rachel, who are incredible humans with a heart for people, community, and preserving tradition. You can tell their heart, soul, and a ton of hard work from their whole family went into restoring & renovating. The beautiful surroundings, period pieces, elegant fixtures, and friendly people made it that much more special & memorable. Thank you both for an unforgettable stay!
