The Water Lantern Festival at Military Park in Indianapolis is an incredibly beautiful, peaceful experience. Seeing thousands of glowing lights float out onto the water all at once is unforgettable. I attended the event with family on July 11, 2026. A beautiful evening at Military Park, sending out love, hope, and prayers for my children’s future. Watching our lanterns float away with thousands of others is a reminder of how connected we all are. If you are attending the festival, keeping the evening's schedule in mind will help ensure everything goes smoothly. The Water Lantern Festival is held at Military Park, which is part of White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. The exact address is: 601 W New York St, Indianapolis, IN 46204 The park itself is a historic 14-acre green space shaped like a military badge, making it a very spacious and scenic backdrop for the food trucks, live music, and the lantern launch along the canal basin. The event officially begins in the evening, and the timeline runs as follows: 6:30 PM: Gates Open (Food trucks, live music, and lantern kit pickup begin) 8:30 PM: Lantern Designing (Time to write your blessings and build the lantern) 9:00 PM – 9:30 PM: Meditation, stories, and launch instructions **9:30 PM – 10:30 PM: The Lantern Launch window 10:30 PM: Event Ends
Military Park is beautiful. There are paths, picnic tables, a covered structure and a lovely view of the canal on the south end. Many events occur here. It's a versatile, fun urban space. Be aware: Overnight the unhoused seem to sleep here and there.

A vast and levelled land area suitable for various activities, such as taking a walk, get together, jogging, picnics, kids shows, walking your pets or just meditation etc. It sits next to the downtown canal trail and opposite the Indiana state museum, it is indeed in a very good location.
Lots of flat grass and trees. Concrete walking paths. Large bathroom structure, although mostly just some overhead shelter. Adjacent to: Medal of Honor Memorial; Cultural Trail; Downtown Canal.
We spent the day taking in everything. Walking into the War Museum my breath was taken away. The detail to everything was amazing. The layout is well done. Start with the tomb of the unknown. Absolutely astonishing and well done. The monuments for WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam are amazing. Each had the names of the lost inscribed so that they would not have died in vane. The monolith, again well done. I'll have to look online and see who is represented by the carvings. I know one to be Moses, the other three I can't quite place. I took hundreds of pictures. The only problem we had was some of the location description at the pedastals were not readable. That did not deter our awe of the Hall.
